This is the third in a series of four blog posts from the National College Access Network (NCAN) Conference in Phoenix, Arizona on September 15—17, 2014. These posts summarize findings from selected presentations at the NCAN Conference that provide concrete, actionable recommendations for practitioners on the following topics: increasing student awareness of “college match”; increasing STEM awareness and connecting with local businesses; structuring internships to prepare students for the workforce; and supporting first-generation college students.
This report discusses ways to effectively use technology to produce significant learning gains and increase engagement for at-risk students. The author examines different types of learning outcomes in technology-rich classroom environments and provides recommendations for how districts can identify which technologies are appropriate for the at-risk students they serve.

Education leaders across the nation are working hard to ensure their students successfully transition from high school into postsecondary education. With so many variables to consider, this is no small task. To assist with the process, the Education Commission of the States (ECS) has launched a Blueprint for College Readiness, which includes a 50-state online database to provide guidance and support to those leaders.

In recent years, schools, districts, and states have relied increasingly upon high-stakes testing as a way to measure student achievement. Yet many worry that educational outcomes have not improved in meaningful ways. Stakeholders remain concerned that the most disadvantaged and underserved students are not reaching their full potential, despite the increased reliance on accountability standards.
