Advancement Via Individual Determination: Method Selection in Conclusions About Program Effectiveness

This evaluation of Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) showed statistically significant differences between AVID and comparison students on measures of enrollment in eighth grade algebra, language arts grades, school absences, and college attendance, favoring AVID students. 

Educational Aspirations Among Low-Income Youths: Examining Multiple Conceptual Models

This study assessed the relationship between high school students home environment and post-secondary aspirations. Data was obtained from the School Success Profile survey administered to middle and high school students. Analyses were limited to a sub-sample of more than 11,000 students from two states. All students in the sample were included based on their eligibility for free or reduced price lunch program. Parental support and parents' high behavioral and academic expectations were associated with greater aspirations.

Evaluation of the Early College High School Initiative: Select Topics on Implementation

This third annual report on the national evaluation of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Early College High School Initiative focuses on the 2005-06 implementation year. ECHS appears to have some preliminary positive impacts on student outcomes and the overall implementation and development of ECHS is progressing. 

A statewide Examination of College Access Services and Resources in Virginia

This study evaluates what types of services, programs and providers are needed in Virginia to increase student access to post-secondary education. This report highlights the resources available by examining statistics, maps, figures and case-narratives, areas where progress is being made and college access roadblocks encountered. A detailed illustration which includes technical information is also described.  

Pathway to Recovery: Implementing a Back on Track Through College Model

This brief from Jobs for the Future outlines a model for engaging disconnected and at-risk youth through the development of aligned postsecondary pathways and academic supports. The brief presents an overview of the current attainment and skills gap and then outlines the Back on Track Through College model, including examples of successful implementation and policy recommendations that support implementation.

Partner Spotlight: The Forum for Youth Investment

The Forum for Youth Investment is a lead partner on the College and Career Readiness and Success Center. The Forum is a nonprofit, nonpartisan action tank dedicated to helping communities and the nation make sure all young people are ready for college, work and life by age 21. As an action tank, we combine the ideas of a think tank – disseminating the best research about youth development practices – with the services of a consultant – helping community leadership groups implement those ideas on the ground. Specifically, this report offers recommendations and best practices to help states restore the value of a high school diploma, redesign high schools to better prepare students for postsecondary success, improve teacher and principal quality, establish high standards and better accountability measures, and improve education governance.

Creating Postsecondary Pathways to Good Jobs for Young High School Dropouts: The Possibilities and the Challenges

This paper focuses on strategies for creating postsecondary pathways for high school dropouts in order to close the skills gap as well as connect the talents of these youth to postsecondary skills and credentials. The paper argues that in order to improve educational and economical outcomes for high school dropouts, there must be alignment of secondary, postsecondary, workforce, and adult education systems and several actions must be taken.

College and Career Readiness in a Competency-Based System

“College and Career Readiness”—you can’t read anything in education these days without this concept popping up. At times it can seem like a nebulous and ever changing term. For states, districts, and schools transitioning to competency-based education systems, what are the implications and opportunities emerging that may help us in managing the concept of college and career readiness for all students?

College Access and Success through Effective Match

On June 14, the American Youth Policy Forum and MDRC co-hosted a Capitol Hill forum titled “College Match Matters.” The forum provided an overview of the College Match Program (CMP), a Chicago Public Schools program designed to encourage academically capable students to choose colleges where they are likely to thrive and graduate.
